ARMED is an acronym for… “Americans Resisting Minority & Ethnic Discrimination.” However, ARMED actually started out under the name, Sincere Citizens Against Racism Everywhere.” With “SCARE” as its acronym, the organization addressed issues of hate, and probable hate crimes, particularly against individuals and companies such as Michael Donovan, Richard Moore and the Nexus Corporation.
SCARE went on to successfully address the matter of a very derogatory social media post by a Harrisonburg VA car salesperson. The post contained two side-by-side images, showing (then) First Lady Michelle Obama next to Harambe the gorilla who was shot and killed weeks earlier, when a three-year-old boy climbed into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. The boy was grabbed and dragged by Harambe, a 17-year-old Western lowland gorilla. Fearing for the boy’s life, a zoo worker shot and killed Harambe. In the social media post, depicting Mrs. Obama alongside Harambe, the gorilla, the caption read, “They Shot The Wrong Gorilla!” SCARE official were successful in seeing the salesman terminated, while the dealership cared enough to post an public apology and commitment to the community of Harrisonburg in the Daily News Record newspaper.
Just as SCARE was closing the chapter on this ugly chapter of poor judgment, a sudden rash of unexplainable and seemingly unjustifiable police involved shootings and killings across the United States, seemed to pop up out of nowhere.
Without hesitation, SCARE leaders made a decision to broaden its scope. Thus, ARMED was formed in July of 2016, in response to the increasing numbers of senseless shootings of American citizens by police officers. While to date, most of ARMED activities have taken place within U.S. boundaries, ARMED was organized with plans of reaching out and supporting all of the Americas.
The founding and managing directors of the national organization are Rev. Michael Donovan, Rev. Stan Maclin, King Salim Khalfani, Evan Ajin and the Rev. Frank Jackson. ARMED has offices in Harrisonburg VA, Richmond VA and Chicago IL, where Annese Jackson is the managing director.
